This project involved comprehensive repairs to the concrete caissons at the Kings Bay Submarine Base in Georgia. The work entailed pressure washing the caissons to eliminate marine growth and disposing of all debris off-site. Spall repairs were performed on approximately 90 square feet of concrete using non-shrink cementitious grout/mortar. Additionally, cracks were prepared and sealed with high-pressure epoxy grout for about 3,313 linear feet of caisson surfaces, both inside and outside, as well as on the deck surface. The project included blasting and coating two tide gauges with epoxy paint, inspecting and reinstalling the caisson rubber seals, and installing missing Monel steel studs on both vertical sides and the bottom of the caisson. Concrete was chipped away at the bottom of the caisson base to a depth of approximately 12 inches, followed by the installation of six 8′ x 2.5′ stainless steel bearing plates with studs and forming and placing concrete to incorporate those bearing plates.

Furthermore, four caisson deck hatch covers were replaced, and ladders were installed inside the caisson. Anodes were also installed for cathodic protection of the ladders, mechanical piping, and handrails. Overall, the project aimed to ensure the structural integrity and longevity of the caissons, enhancing safety and functionality at the submarine base.

Key components of the scope included approximately 5,420 cubic yards of reinforced concrete repairs on piles, pile caps, bull rails, beams, under-deck areas, and capstan foundations. A metalizing and cathodic protection system was installed on reinforced concrete pile caps, covering approximately 1,887 square feet of wharf concrete pile cap and 140 square feet of concrete piles. Anodes were installed and repairs were made to the bonding harness system on approximately 667 steel piles.

Additionally, the fender wraps on 207 steel piles (30″ and 24″) were cleaned, coated, and replaced using Denso wraps. The driver’s float was replaced, and repairs were made to guide piles, along with miscellaneous repairs to mooring hardware, fender piles, and utility structures. Divers were utilized for pressure washing, chipping, and cleaning loose concrete, and they installed Cathodic Protection Jackets for approximately 667 concrete piles. Various electrical repairs were conducted, including the replacement of power cable brackets, and additional incidental work was performed as required. Throughout the project, strict adherence to maritime safety requirements was maintained.
