FIBER OPTIC POWER & UNDERWATER CONSTRUCTION

NUWC Seneca Lake Sonar Test Facility, Dresden, NY

PROJECT DETAILS

The objective of this project was to design, procure, install, and conduct post-installation testing for a new power and fiber optic cable between the Shore Landing Site (SLSTF) and the Shore Management Point (SMP). The scope included the installation of a Beach Manhole (BMH) at the shore landing site, the specified conduits, switchgear, and other required modifications to the shore facilities, as well as modifications to the SMP to facilitate the proper grounding and connection of the new cable.

Precon Marine was responsible for procuring approximately 12,600 feet of power cable in compliance with project specifications. Precon Marine was tasked with preparing the shore facilities and the SMP to receive and ground the cable, as well as installing the cable between these locations using surface lay techniques. The cable bundle, which included both power and fiber optic cables, was run through the installed conduits to their respective termination points at the shore landing site and SMP. Once the cable was installed, the contractor completed termination of the power and fiber optic cable bundles and performed thorough post-installation testing, including power conduit and fiber optic testing, to ensure system integrity between the shore termination locations and the SMP.

The shore landing process required routing the new cable from a shallow water point through a contractor-installed conduit into the newly constructed Beach Manhole (BMH). Additionally, 400 feet of articulated pipe were connected to the end of the shore conduit extending into the lake, providing additional protection to the cable in the shallow water areas.
